in 1996 there was only one software that i know of that would run on a mac.i think it was called punto. That said, wilcom is the best software, pulse is probably second. If you have the time and ambition to learn, that's great! but until you have an idea how things work it may be best to farm out your designs. you could create something beautiful on screen, then have it stitch out and look awful.

it would be awful to invest $3000 in software and then not have the time to learn how to actually digitize. just understand that its not a matter of buying software and creating artwork like in coreldraw. if you're seriously interested in learning, you should go for it. and just when you think you have it figured out, digitizing for a cap is different than digitizing for flats. you need to understand underlay, the different kinds of stitches and when to use what kind, stitch widths/lengths, stitch direction, compensation, etc. you have to understand what different stitch directions will do with the push and pull of different kinds of garments/fabric. pathing is really important if you want to create a design that runs efficiently. you have to learn to think like the embroidery machine, and you have to think about how the garment will shift/move while you're digitizing. i also had a background in graphics.which did me zero good getting into digitizing. in addition to the $ investment, it also requires a huge time investment. not only is the software expensive, but i'd recommend buying an embroidery machine because if you can't sew out out your designs, you'll have no idea what you're sending out. there is a LOT to learn and its a major investment. Click to expand.digitizing isn't a matter of just buying digitizing software.
